From Globo Gym to Black Flag: A Road Trip Reality Check
A couple weeks back, Melanie and I packed up and headed down to Jacksonville, North Carolina to help our oldest son and his wife get their new home dialed in. You know the deal—paint, clean, move, lift, carry… repeat.
Three straight days of real, hands-on work.
And I’ll tell you this—there’s something incredibly satisfying about realizing your fitness actually means something. Not just numbers on a board or weight on a bar, but the ability to show up for your family and handle whatever’s in front of you.
That’s the kind of fitness that matters.
Then Came the Curveball… The Globo Gym
In between all the house projects, I needed to get a workout in. So I did what most people do when they’re out of town—I found a nearby “globo gym.”
And within about 30 seconds of walking in, I remembered exactly why Black Flag exists.
The vibe hit immediately.
Corporate. Cold. Transactional.
Before I could even think about training, I was hit with a barrage of upsells—this membership, that add-on, this upgrade, that service. It felt less like walking into a place to improve your health and more like stepping onto a sales floor.
The Layout Looked Right… But Felt Off
Don’t get me wrong—the place had everything:
- Rows of barbells, dumbbells, and racks
- Endless cardio machines (seriously… miles of them)
- A turf area with sleds, monkey bars, and all the “functional” bells and whistles
On paper, it checked every box.
But something was missing.
Actually… a lot was missing.
The Energy Was… Different
As I trained, I started observing the floor.
People wandering aimlessly.
Others doing the same body part for what felt like hours.
Some just walking around, talking, killing time.
There was no direction. No intention.
And maybe the biggest thing—no connection.
Instead of a supportive, welcoming environment, it felt like every person was on their own island. A mix of ego, comparison, and indifference filled the space.
Even some of the trainers looked disengaged—just going through the motions, counting reps, waiting for the session to end.
“Functional Fitness”… But Missing the Function
One day, they ran a “functional fitness class.”
A coach with a microphone.
Five stations.
Rotate, repeat, sweat.
Sure, people were breathing hard. They got a sweat in.
But when it was all said and done… what did it actually build?
There was no structure. No progression. No bigger picture.
Just movement for the sake of movement.
And That’s When It Hit Me…
Sitting there between sets, watching it all unfold, I had a moment of clarity:
This is exactly what we’re NOT.
At Black Flag, it’s different.
Not because we have better equipment (although we do).
Not because we train harder (we do that too).
But because of how and why we do what we do.
The Black Flag Difference
At Black Flag Strength & Conditioning, training isn’t random.
It’s intentional. It’s structured. It’s built on a blend of science and real-world experience.
Every day has a purpose.
Every movement has meaning.
Every person matters.
You’re not just another body in the room.
You’re part of something.
- Coaches who actually coach
- A community that shows up for each other
- Programming designed to build a complete human—strength, conditioning, resilience, and longevity
And maybe most importantly…
An environment where people genuinely want to see you win.
Fitness That Carries Over to Life
That trip reminded me of something powerful:
Fitness isn’t about looking the part.
It’s about living the part.
It’s being able to:
- Help your kids move into a new home
- Handle long days of physical work
- Show up energized instead of exhausted
- Live a life that’s strong, capable, and resilient
That’s the mission.
Not just better workouts.
Better people.

Owner/Head Coach – Black Flag Strength & Conditioning
This is excellent! I can do everything outside the gym (Black Flag) that I could do 20 years ago. I thrive on big projects and routine, lawn, cleaning etc., whatever needs to be accomplished, even occasionally helping friends move (Ouch). But I thank the excellent programming and friendships that have developed at BFA for my ability to “do life” everyday with “intent” and enthusiasm. Loving it! Keep up the great training coach!
